ARTIST PROFILE

Chong Yanhong is a Singaporean art practitioner who graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Spatial dimension has always been a subject of interest to her as an artist. Living in a city constantly undergoing construction and rebuilding, she is particularly interested in the underlying structures of architecture, most of the time using the aesthetic of architecture as a playground to her research. Her current works are based on references from ancient, modernist, contemporary, and mythical buildings and structures. These images are manipulated and altered considerably before being reduced further in her drawings, allowing areas of emptiness to create room for visual order and disorder. Her works were selected for a number of exhibitions including Drawing Relation (LASALLE College of the Arts), The Affordable Art Fair (Singapore), Art Buffet (Singapore Art Museum) and It is Like This (the Esplanade tunnel, Singapore).

At Youkobo, Yanhong will be collecting images of architecture in Tokyo. These architectural sites include Yoyogi National Stadium, 21-21 Design Sight and Meiji Jingu Shrine. In her drawings, certain parts of the images of these structures will be removed and the remaining parts pieced together as she explores the relationship between the drawing and the paper itself. She will also be experimenting with the transferred images of these structures, thus causing the original architectural forms to become almost unperceivable to the viewer.
