Malin Pettersson Öberg
[Sweden]Profile:
Malin Pettersson Öberg (*1979) is a Swedish visual artist working in a variety of media. She holds a master’s degree in Fine art from the Konstfack University in Stockholm and has studied experimental film at the EnsAD in Paris. From a research based practice, Pettersson Öberg uses the essay as a format to explore how we experience time and describe places and cultural or national identity. In a world of constant translations between languages, places and formats she approaches questions of destabilisation and estrangement and assembles fragments from various sources into meditative flows of words and images. Since 2007, Pettersson Öberg has taken part in numerous screenings and exhibitions in Sweden and abroad, a.o. at the Bonniers Konsthall and IASPIS in Stockholm, at CentQuatre and the Swedish/Finnish institutes in Paris, and at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival. She is a teacher and co-organiser of the studio space Slakthusateljéerna in Stockholm since 2010.
Residence Plan:
At Youkubo Art Space, Pettersson Öberg will continue an associative research departing from the year 1974 in Japan, from ”radioactivity” and its various links with time and space/the room. She is intrigued by the paradoxical relationship to nuclear power in Japan, how it formulates in literary and visual culture, historically and today, and by how social welfare functions and formulates. She enquires the image of ”Sweden in Japan” by visiting places such as Sweden Hills in Hokkaido, and explores the idea of appropriation and independence. Her research will a.o. be carried out at the Japan Foundation Library in Yotsuya and through meetings with academics, activists and artists/writers. It will be the departure point for an essayist work, which will be exhibited and published as part of the project Species of Spaces 1974 at Uppsala Museum of Art in Sweden (2016), and later hopefully in Paris and Japan. Her residency is supported by The Swedish Arts Grants Committee's International Programme for Visual Artists.
