Liz Sargent
[USA]Liz Sargent is a visual artist who creates sculptural objects and environments exploring ideas of the creativity and destructiveness of relentless human activity, be it acts of formation or futile repetition, in contrast and comparison to the unrelenting powers of nature.
Exhibitions of note include DesCours, an invitational contemporary architecture and art event showcasing installations throughout the city of New Orleans, presented by the American Institute of Architects, Hothouse: Expanding the Field of Fiber at Cranbrook, 1970-2007 at the Cranbrook Art Museum, Fray at the Textile Museum of Canada, and Abstracted Landscapes at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, MA. Her work has also been featured in FiberArts, Azure, and Selvedge. She currently teaches at Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia.
During the residency, I plan to create artwork utilizing the traditional textile techniques of knotted netting and knitting- the fugitive strand will serve as a source of inspiration to be developed into multiple layers of ephemeral structures dissolving and shifting from one system of activity to another as process and entropy overlap and converge.
Through this work, exploration of the natural elements of destruction and renewal, and the ability of our natural world to adapt and prevail in relationship to human activity, describes the relationship that I hope to explore. The intangible will subtly emerge as one becomes aware of the speed of these events, the momentary elements beyond awareness, the underlying cycles beyond our grasp as humans.
