Jay Komuda
[Poland]Jay Komuda (born in 1978) is a visual artist of Polish descent. His photographs reflect on the contemporary urban environment and the people that populate it. They focus on places we pass unnoticed and areas we would call unattractive without a moment of hesitation. They examine spots that are characterless and stripped of human presence, public space we shape and living conditions we confront everyday.
As a part of his art practice he investigates prosaic locations, residential areas, industrial parks and limitless alleys. They appear lifeless, uninspiring and dull. In the same time they hold certain allure that he finds remarkable.
"Cities Without People" (working title) is an ongoing project that explores contemporary urban living.
While inhabiting local neighbourhoods we starve for more, for excitement, for cool, for bling. Being aroused by the environment at large we feel alive; deep down though, we remain tired lifeless, lonely and abused. We are afraid of the usual and the ordinary.
The project explores the casual, the everyday, the mundane. It simplifies, slows the pace down and tells a story of urban landscape we pass by without noticing. It lets us pause, perceive, rediscover and appreciate the space that surrounds us. "Cities Without People" is about balance in a congested urban environment. Its about facing reality as is, and accepting it. It is about our presence and lack of our presence in the same time.
No Purpose, Jay Komuda
It is the city that takes our life away. It is the city that makes promises. While occupying residential neighbourhoods we starve for more, for excitement, for cool, for bling. Constant arousal provided by urban environment reminds us that we are alive, deep down though, we remain tired, lifeless, lonely and abused. We trust its brands and corporations which make us feel special, needed and valuable. In the same time we are afraid of the usual and the ordinary. We sacrifice too much. We sacrifice self.
Jay Komuda is a visual artist passionate about mundane and boring. He uses photography to reflect upon the contemporary city and its inhabitants.
