Deanna Dowling

Deanna is a New Zealand based artist working primarily in video and sculpture. Her work is often concerned with economic growth, urban regeneration and the impacts of these on the land both physically and culturally. Individuals within affected environments are integral to informing the trajectory of her work. Respect of local knowledge and value systems in the form of discussion, consolation and collaboration likewise inform her process. Dowling’s studio practice is materially driven, considering objects as provocations for thought in regards to places in precarious states of flux. Her past works have utilised materials which have culminated in public interventions, gallery based installations and small-scale print media.

During her time at Youkobo Art Space, Deanna will work on a sculptural based research project that will consider how intergenerational craftsmanship and the passing down of knowledge result’s in imbued object memory and knowledge. Deanna will explore her own relationship to materials in the context of a Japanese material sensibility. She is interested in how a long term commitment to a craft influences moments in contemporary life.
