Leonie Andrews

[Australia]

Profile
Leonie Andrews (1957) is an Australian visual artist working in textiles and print-making. Her work is characterized by its exploration of the themes of location and how we connect to a particular place. Andrews draws inspiration from local streetscapes and activities using the embroidered stitch as a tool for social commentary. She documents suburban graffiti and ephemera and investigates how people relate to their suburban environment. The time intensive nature of her process creates an inbuilt tension between the work she makes and the ephemera she records.

Residence Plan
Previous visits to Japan have highlighted both the connections and dis-locations between her own cultural experiences and those she experiences in Japan. Andrews will be exploring suburban life in Tokyo through a daily visual recording of her surroundings, which will form the basis of her more detailed expressions in stitch, print and collage.
