Donegal - The Ninth Kubochi Exhibition

Masayuki Kishimoto, Yuichi Higurashi, Ryo Matsumoto [Japan]

2015.01.10 - 2015.01.25

Donegal, the title of this group exhibition, is a place name in the northwest of Ireland previously visited by Akihiko Kuwayama, the curator of this exhibition. For Kuwayama, the severe natural environment and culture of this place was an inspiration in terms of gaining knowledge about substance within sculpture.
Ryo Matsumoto carves wood to the point where the figurative forms of his sculptures begin to disintegrate. Taking the theme of time, Masayuki Kishimoto creates pillar-like sculptural forms giving shape to things in movement. Yuichi Higurashi creates forms resembling weapons of mass destruction from rock salt that are subject to destruction by water.
Although taking very different themes and forms, the works in this exhibition are strongly tied to a world view Kuwayama experienced in Donegal in which, with the passage of time, materials and sculptural forms are subject to a process of deterioration.
