Noriko Nakamura [Japan|Australia]

Noriko Nakamura completed a Fine Art Foundation Diploma at Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, University of the Arts London, before receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2012. Nakamura experiments with the transformational potential of materials in order to explore the relationship that exists between humans and the material world. She has presented solo exhibitions at West Space, Melbourne; TCB art inc.,Melbourne. Her work has been exhibited at XYZ Collective, Tokyo; RM gallery, Auckland; Dog Park Art Project Space, Christchurch; Murray White Room, Melbourne and National Gallery of Victoria Studio, Melbourne. She has received Australian Council ArtStart grant in 2012, Substation graduate art prize and Maude Glover Fleay Award.

Through this residency in Youkobo Art Space, she will draw on Japanese language and its influence in everyday experience toward the development of new work. The body of new work investigates the dialogue between language and installation. As a Japanese-born person who has been living overseas for about 10 years, this residency will be a significant step for her to work closely with her own cultural heritage.
