Amnion

Saara Ekström [Finland ]

2018.11.03 - 2018.11.23

Saara Ekström’s films and photographs examine the significance of transformation, focusing on time that both nurtures and erodes. In her new 8mm film Amnion (: a thin membrane surrounding the embryo) made at Youkobo Art Space, images of synthetic and organic materials blend and plastic becomes a part of our DNA.

Profile:
Saara Ekström works in film, photography, text and installation, and experiments with diverse medias in order to create an aesthetically and conceptually precise outcome. Various images are combined to create worlds, where reality and fiction, growth and withering, the seductive and repulsive challenge each other. Ekström examines the significance of transformation, while questioning our conventional ways of classifying matter. The blending levels of time capture the viewer within its dimensions, it nurtures and erodes, as the valuable turns into trash and the insignificant transforms into something treasured. Creation processes start in neglected wastelands, full of materials that have been cast aside. The weight and weightlessness of time, together with the ambivalent desire to both remember and forget, are all at the core of Saara Ekström’s art.
