Jeremy Bakker

[Australia]

Working across installation, drawing, sculpture and photography he aims to convey a sense of movement between opposites - between absence and presence, the minute and the vast, the particular and the general. He often incorporates manual repetition and tactile materials to explore the role of the body in how we continue to make sense of our place in the world. Bakker is based in Melbourne and recently participated in the international group exhibition - Immanent Landscape (Kurumaya Museum of Art) and a collaborative project for the Echigo-Tsumari Snow Field Festival.

Artist's comment
“I am interested in the history of the Youkobo site as a sanatorium for Tuberculosis patients. A sanatorium functions as place to rest, regain energy and to heal. Perhaps the function of art in society can be considered in similar terms ? a 'place' that is nurturing, energizing and life-affirming. I will be exploring ways to draw out the connections between the unique history of the Youkobo building and artwork created on site.”
